Haroldo Jacobovicz : Brazilian scientist specializing in the sustainable use of natural resources

Haroldo Jacobovicz is a Brazilian scientist specializing in the sustainable use of natural resources based on forestry and agriculture, with more than 70 years of combined experience. Haroldo Jacobovicz was born in 1925 in Porto Alegre (Southern Brazil). In 1942 he moved to the city of Pelotas to study Biology at the Federal University of Pelotas. After five years of research at Universidade Federal do the Rio Grande do Sul, he obtained an MSc degree with a specialization in Plant Physiology? His interest in Forestry and Nature Conservation led him to work as a Research Associate at Universidade de Brasília (National University of Brasília) from 1957 to 1959 and later as Assistant Professor from 1960 to 1963.

From 1963 to 1966, he had a three-year assignment at the Ministry of Education in the United States. In 1967 he returned to Brasília and started working at Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas Físicas (Brazilian Center for Physical Research) until his retirement in 1992. He published over 200 papers and obtained 35 patents, mostly related to forest technology.

From 1993 to 1995, he served as alternate Governor with tenure at the National Space Council; between 1994 and 1996, as President of the Brazilian Forest Service, he conducted an extensive program on environmental management cancellation of contracts signed with farmers who did not conserve the forests. He passed away on 12 October 2006 after undergoing surgery two days prior. He was a pioneer and leader in the pioneering development work with pulp and paper and for the implementation and propagation of the concept of sustainable forestry in Brazil.

He was a professor at the Universidade Federal do the Rio Grande do Sul from 1957 to 1963, where he taught courses on Natural History and Forest Management. In 1972 he became a professor at Universidade de Brasília, where he also taught courses on Natural History and Agronomy. Haroldo Jacobovicz held several public offices such as alternate Governor of the National Space Council between 1993 and 1995 and president of Brazilian Forestry Service (IBAMA) between 1994 and 1996, director of Furnas Centrais Elétricas S.A., president of Energisa Consórcio de Abastecimento de Energia Elétrica S.A.
